Family-Friendly Fun in Charlotte Things to Do with Kids in Charlotte

family fun charlotte nc

We are Amber & Mike and we have spent the last 21 years traveling around the world with our 6 kids on an adventure of a lifetime. If you decide to hit Charlotte in the fall, you can catch a Carolina Panthers game at Bank of America Stadium. Even if you don’t make it during the fall, you can tour the stadium in one of their many walk-up style tours or private and group tours. Nothing provides pure joy and nostalgia quite like an old fashioned soda shop. Pike’s Old Fashioned Soda Shop has a friendly and comfortable spirit, much like classic American diners all over the country.

When you bring the family to visit the historic Latta Plantation they will see North Carolina history coming to life as they make their way around the cotton plantation. Families can see what life was like for the slaves and planters as you visit the eleven farm outbuildings (which include a restored slave house), on a self-guided tour. You can join in a guided tour of the plantation home which has been carefully restored to accurately reflect living conditions for the settler family around 1800 to 1865. After your history lesson you can enjoy walking one of the nature trails or rent a canoe or kayak to explore the lake.

Crafts for Kids

If you aren’t familiar with the Queen City, here are a few facts to get acquainted. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 15th most populous city in America. Between 2005 to 2015 (right in the timeframe of my family’s move here!), Charlotte ranked as the country’s fastest-growing metro area.

Colonel Francis Beatty Park

Modern art is some of the most challenging but also some of the most striking. It’s one of the main Charlotte attractions because of just how much skill is shown. Experiencing this at the Charlotte Motor Speedway can be one of the most thrilling experiences of your life. After your visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, you’ll hopefully find yourself wanting to see a race in action.

Freedom Park is a beautiful park just outside of downtown Charlotte that has a huge playground area, shaded walking trails, and even a Play 60 NFL playground you can explore as well. Finding something to do with your kids that doesn’t cost an astronomical amount in today’s economy can be difficult. Luckily, we gathered some of the best free things in Charlotte, NC that are both family-friendly and fun.

Charlotte, North Carolina is full of sightseeing fun for couples, families, and even those going on their own. The exhibits at the Charlotte Museum of History show the cultural significance of the city and its continuing evolution. There are multiple buildings to check out on the museum’s property. If you want to bring nature into your Charlotte trip, you need to come to Crowders Mountain. Crowders Mountain shows why North Carolina is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the US. There are multiple areas to explore, including the Orchid Conservatory, the White Garden, and the Four Seasons Garden.

Small Hands Big Art

The past 14 years have taught me what an underestimated city it is to explore and enjoy with kids. My children are now 5 and 9 and have opposite interests and personalities, but we have had great success in finding many attractions in our hometown on common ground. Located in the Belmont neighborhood, the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is a peaceful venue to escape from the busy city in North Carolina at the weekend. Featuring thousands of plants across its forest and meadow, you can take a breath of fresh air while exploring the diverse plants. The natural spot is a mix of a conservatory and garden, offering 380 acres of beautiful land, sparkling fountains, and walk-around paved trails. You can see over 54 exotic animals, including 14 endangered species like tigers, nachos, and others.

Tweens & Teens

Besides watching the game, the artwork exhibits are open to guests, including teens. Feel free to delve into unique displays and artworks offering a visual illustration of the region’s history and its rich sports. When the match is off, the arena is also used for other events, including live music performances, WWE events, and more. It is one of the most serene and beautiful spots for teens in Queen City. The park is perfect for escaping the city’s hustle and bustle while taking a breath of fresh air.

In the heart of the Uptown area of Charlotte is this theatre-library-play place combo, a must on your list of Charlotte kids activities. Many of the local farmers will be on hand to answer any questions and tell you about their produce. The market holds regular competitions and tastings and children are encouraged to enter competitions to see who can produce the best freshly baked breads, pies and other goodies. You can stock up on home-made preserves and condiments, buy artisanal breads and cheeses and listen to live music.

In addition to that, there are hands-on activities for children at this library. It is also possible to see a show at the IMAX theater of Discovery Place Science. Children can learn about nature and the universe through various interesting movies that are projected on a domed screen. Charlotte Motor Speedway is a legendary racetrack located in Concord, North Carolina, United States.

Even if you’re only able to stay for a day or two, you’ll see why Charlotte has such a great reputation. Guests at Great Wolf Lodge stay onsite, and the waterpark tickets are bundled into the room price. You get to see the biggest pool from above, ask questions about the animals, and see how and what they're fed. Throughout the show, the kids were encouraged to participate by yelling out animal names or numbers. There’s also a smaller children’s theater, the Wells Fargo Playhouse, onsite.

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord is a 26,000-square-foot indoor aquarium. This one-of-a-kind attraction allows visitors to experience the magical world beneath our seas with marine habitats, displays, and close encounters with thousands of sea creatures. Take a fascinating journey from the North Carolina coastline to the ocean depths through 10 interactive zones. Get up close to majestic stingrays, take a walk through our mesmerizing 180° Ocean Tunnel, and find out how it feels to touch a sea star in our Interactive Touchpool. You will also find that the Mint Museum has Free admission on Wednesday Nights from 5-9. The exhibits feature permanent collections along with some rotating exhibitions.
