Flying Into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood for a Cruise From Miami

We have the full facts about nine different ways that travelers can get from the airport to the cruise capital of the world. In other words, if you are looking at airfares and flight times, then you need to factor in about $100 round trip for a ride to the port and an hour each way. Just as with cruising from the Port of Miami, it makes the most sense to fly into Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport if you are taking a cruise from Fort Lauderdale. It’s just a few minutes between the airport and the cruise port.

The airport is located only about minutes from the cruise ships (depending on traffic). That’s about a $15 ride using rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. As well, there is also public transportation that can get you to the ships for just a couple of dollars. If you prefer a more direct and private mode of transportation, taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are readily available at Miami airport.

There are two main airports you can use to get to Port Everglades. Fort Lauderdale airport caters mainly to low-cost carriers and is just a few miles from the port. If you use traditional carriers you may end up flying into Miami, 30 miles to the south. Taxis do offer convenience in that they are already there at the airport and waiting to offer a ride whenever you arrive. Just follow the signs to ground transportation when your flight arrives. Expect to pay a bit more if you’re traveling by taxi from the Fort Lauderdale airport due to the longer ride.

Should You Fly Into the Miami or Fort Lauderdale Airport For Your Cruise?

Obviously it is cheaper to go from the Miami airport compared to Fort Lauderdale because of the distance. Carnival, for example, offers a shuttle from the Miami airport to your cruise for $23 one-way/$46 round trip per person. The same shuttle runs about $37 one-way/$74 round-trip per person from the Fort Lauderdale airport. One thing to note is that we know of no hotels in Fort Lauderdale with shuttles to the Port of Miami. All told, expect the trip to take between an hour and a hour-and-a-half, depending on how long you have to wait on transfers. The bad news is it can take some time and several transfers.

Express Shuttle provides shared-ride shuttle service (transfers) every  hour from Port of Miami to Miami Airport and Fort Lauderdale Airport. Ride-sharing services have opened up a much cheaper and convenient way to get to the port.
